Newsflash: Jason Grill & BBQ

A tip of the snout to John Shelton Reed, who alerted me to a relative newcomer to the Eastern NC barbecue scene: Jason Grill & BBQ, a traditional wood-burning shack of a barbecue joint that looks like it is from another era.  John has already agreed to give me a full report and pictures when he visits Jason’s, so I’ll share his comments with you soon.  In the meantime, check out the pictures and very positive reviews on Chowhound and at the NC Folklife website.

Jason’s looks like the type of place I dream of “discovering” when I travel down the backroads of NC, so rest assured I’ll visit soon.  Readers, please chime in if you’ve been there and can confirm it is the holy grail the reviews make it out to be.

  1. Thanks for the credit, but it really belongs to David Cecelski, who put me on to this place with his splendid post at

Dale and I intended to check this place out today (Friday, 1/29), but have postponed our visit since everyone seems to be expecting a blizzard.

  2. John, I only meant to give you credit for being the one to alert me to the joint. You are right that David Cecelski deserves credit for playing Columbus on this one and “discovering” the joint… I wonder if he thought he was in India at the time. David’s review is linked from my original post.

  3. Checked out Jason’s today. Even gave Jason a ride to the store toget some cigs. He gave me a tour of the pits in exchange. Had a great time chatting.

The ‘cue was really good — coarsely chopped, lightly sauced (eastern style), nicely smoky. It was a long way out of my way, but I’m glad I went.

I think I prefer Grady’s but this was good.

  4. Thanks for the report, BBQ Dave. I can’t wait to try it.
