Beach Blanket Barbecue
Based on my limited experience eating barbecue at or near the beach, I think the best advice I can provide for such situations is not to indulge. Perhaps it’s the over-supply of sunshine and sand, the undersupply of hickory, or the BBQ joint owners having mercury poisoning from all the nearby shellfish, but for some reason beach BBQ joints rarely offer ‘cue worth eating. A & G Bar-B-Que & Chicken, located on the main drag just off the waterfront in Carolina Beach and featuring a generous two ampersands in its name, does nothing to change my mind about beach ‘cue. That’s the bad news. The good news is that next time you are in Carolina Beach you can skip the ‘cue and have plenty of room for donuts from Britt’s, which vies for the title of Best Donut Shop in America, in my opinion. More on that later.
Eat Your Heart Out, Krispy Kreme
Britt’s Donut Shop has existed on the boardwalk at Carolina Beach for 70 years and it’s still going strong. Their glazed yeast donuts (think Krispy Kreme but even better) are light, fluffy and fried to perfection. They taste like the love-child of a torrid affair between a humble peasant donut and beignet royalty. In other words, they’re really good. Better yet, Britt’s reminds me of the best kind of barbecue joint. It’s quaint, has a friendly staff made up largely of a multi-generation family, has a focused menu (one type of donut, take it or leave it, and milk or soda) and is a little bit quirky–only open in the summer and no phone. So, next time you’re in Carolina Beach, skip the ‘cue and eat at Britt’s instead.

As for us being college kids, well, you heard wrong on that one–it’s been 10+ years since we were in college. However, we still have our youthful good looks!
Love Carolina Beach to death pretty much, well yeah all of it. Lol 🙂 I just went down there to visit for the day earlier this afternoon. Live up here in Raleigh at the moment but it’s well worth the drive down there just for the day or to even go and spend 3 or 4 days to a week if you wanted from what I would say to do. Lots of thing to do, fun, games, rides, awesome time everything should have weather it be adults or kids, teens, etc!! All should have a blasting and super fun time!! 😉 Best place to eat of course is the Gulf Stream for breakfast is my favorite meal of all there, and of course A & G, now you want a good hot dog or hamburger with a side of fries or onion rings!! You are stupid to not go to that place, I am sorry. Lol 🙂 And Britt’s is the best place if you are going for something sweet after a meal or just a great evening thing to eat while you are hanging or chilling out on the boardwalk overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. 🙂 Again, anyone that wants to have a good time and eat some good food, come to Carolina Beach, North Carolina. 🙂 🙂
Matthew, thanks for the comments. You are right that Carolina Beach is a ton of fun, well worth it even if I don’t much care for A&G’s BBQ. I will try their hot dogs and burgers instead next time I’m there!
